Australia: Mary MacKillop Today Highways and Byways Program

We are proud to announce an exciting new chapter in our mission to support those experiencing disadvantage and exclusion, particularly in rural and regional Australia. The Highways and Byways program – the mission entity of the Missionary Sisters of Service (MSS) – has officially transferred to Mary MacKillop Today, forming the Mary MacKillop Today Highways and Byways Program.

Through the Mary MacKillop Today Highways and Byways Program, we will continue the legacy established by the Missionary Sisters of Service and the John Wallis Foundation, to empower people and communities across Australia.

This will be done through the Mary MacKillop Today Highways and Byways Small Grants Program and a partnership with Free2b Girls.

Mary MacKillop Today Highways and Byways Small Grants Program:

Small grants are provided to community-led organisations to support projects that address disadvantage and exclusion within towns and communities, especially in rural and regional Australia.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available and are open to organisations across Australia. Each year, the grants have a different theme which focus on projects that bring communities together, reaching out to people socially and geographically isolated, strengthening community relationships and networks, caring for land, developing leadership, and empowering people to meet the challenges that confront them.

Free2b Girls:

Free2b offers a range of programs designed for young women aged 10-25. The primary youth engagement program, Free2b Girls Groups, is specifically tailored for girls aged between 10-16 who live in rural/remote areas of Tasmania. Free2b Groups focus on creating welcoming spaces where participants can connect, express themselves and explore their interests through fun and engaging activities like cooking, dance and arts & crafts. All Free2b programs are grounded in the values of freedom, creativity, safety, and respect and are run by local communities.
