When can I apply?
The Community Stream and Highways and Byways Remote and Regional Grants are expected to open in early 2027. The Sisters of Saint Joseph Stream opens in August 2026. Each grant opens for one round a year, so check the current round’s opening and closing dates before you begin — late applications can’t be considered.
Which grant is right for me?
The Community Stream is for eligible community organisations across Australia (up to $10,000). The Sisters of Saint Joseph Stream is for the Sisters of Saint Joseph and associates only (up to $10,000). Highways and Byways Regional and Remote Stream focuses on rural and regional communities across Australia (up to $5,000). If you’re not sure, get in touch before you apply.
Who can apply for the Community Stream?
You’ll generally need to be a not-for-profit community organisation or charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and holding an ABN, delivering your project in Australia. Preference goes to organisations the ACNC defines as ‘Small’ Charities, and individuals aren’t eligible.
Who can apply for Highways and Byways grants?
They are open to community groups that are an Incorporated Association or similar (or auspiced by one) with individuals, trusts and most schools not eligible.
Can I include administration costs?
Up to 20% of your budget can go to administration and at least 80% must go to project activities. Full salaries, full administration, and capital costs are not funded.
How long do we have to deliver the project?
Up to 12 months. Your project can continue beyond that, but the funded activities should be delivered within the year.
Can we apply if we’ve had a grant before?
Yes — for a new or an existing project. We can’t fund ongoing service delivery, so show how the funding will enhance the project and help it become more sustainable. For Highways and Byways, preference is given to first-time applicants, and previously funded organisations must have met all their acquittal requirements.
Can we submit more than one application?
We ask each organisation to submit just one application, or to clearly nominate a first preference if you’re considering more than one.
What can’t be funded?
Public appeals to support a single individual (such as school fees for one student); full salaries, wages or stipends; capital funding; emergency relief; ongoing running costs; projects that promote a particular faith or a political party; and arrangements that pool funds into another grants or scholarship program. If you’re unsure whether a cost qualifies, just ask.
Do we need referees?
For the Community and Sisters of Saint Joseph Streams, yes — two referees who can speak to your organisation’s capacity, the project’s likely impact, and the need for it. If your project works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, at least one referee must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person with cultural authority to discuss your project.
What happens if we’re successful?
We walk alongside you rather than simply hand over funds. You’ll provide a short progress report at the halfway point, and a final report with a financial acquittal at the end, we supply all the templates. We may also invite you to share your story, always with your consent.
